In a recent blog, we discussed four considerations to make when choosing pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs), such as level of bleed-through and degree of exposure. However, it’s also important to think about the PSA tape’s bonding strength to the given substrate, or its peel adhesion.
What is Peel Adhesion?
Peel adhesion refers to how easy or difficult it is to remove a pressure sensitive tape from an applied surface. Over time, measuring an adhesive’s level of peel force has become one of the standard test methods for PSA strength.
In particular, it is measured only across the width of the taped substrate, which is the more difficult separating force to resist.
How Does it Differ for Removable and Permanent Applications?
Understanding the level of peel adhesion is important in both removable and permanent pressure sensitive tape applications.
- Removable Tape Applications
In removable tape applications, peel adhesion must maintain a balance between level of adhesion and how easy it is to remove. It’s also important to keep in mind when selecting a pressure sensitive tape that peel force builds up over time.
Masking tape is a good example of a removable tape with ideal peel adhesion. It maintains sufficient adhesion during application but can be easily removed without leaving residue behind.
- Permanent Tape Applications
High peel adhesion is important in permanent bonding applications. Maximum peel force ensures the pressure sensitive tape remains on the substrate even in the toughest conditions. Items to be considered in determining its peel adhesion for these applications include:
- Adhesion level to substrate
- Application temperatures
- Environmental conditions
- Level of adhesion strength over time
For both removable and permanent pressure sensitive tape applications, understanding peel adhesion is key to determining if a certain tape meets your needs.
