For over 125 years, Bostik has been a leading global adhesive and sealant supplier specializing in many industrial markets. In addition to formulating smart solutions that improve operational efficiencies and end products overall, our extensive lab testing capabilities further ensure customer needs are met. While we offer many testing options, gain insight into three common lab tests we conduct on our products.
At Bostik, we test products to even the most stringent standards for a given market. For example, we use a combination of different temperatures and humidity levels to determine a product’s adhesion ability to a given substrate. These levels typically range from the following:
- Temperature: -50°F to 400°F (-45°C to 204°C)
- Humidity: 0% to 100%
Additionally, we work closely with customers when testing adhesion levels. In particular, this entails testing our product with their chosen materials prior to implementation. Doing so enables us to understand the material’s specific adhesive criteria levels ahead of time and adjust our product recommendation accordingly.
As customers opt to change their substrates, shifting to higher recycled content, lighter weight, thinner or lower surface energy materials, we value working with them to ensure our adhesives overcome any associated adhesion challenges.
Lap Shear Testing
In addition to adhesion tests, Bostik has the capability to conduct lap shear testing. This test intentionally pulls bonded layers apart to determine:
- Adhesive shear strength
- Surface preparation needs
- Environmental durability
This process can provide critical information needed to engineer a new bonded part or assembly.
Age studies are another important testing process Bostik conducts. In particular, age studies are used to assess:
- U.V. affect:
- In particular, this cites if and how a product discolors when exposed to the sun for extended periods of time.
- Understanding if and when a product cracks helps determine its level of durability.
- Adhesion over time:
- In time, a sealant or adhesive’s bond may become brittle or break. Knowing performance limitations is important.
Additionally, Bostik conducts age studies in various part of the country and through third party testing sites. This thorough testing lends validity to our products maintaining performance levels over time and under different types of stress and environmental conditions.
