What does safety mean to me?

One of the reasons I chose to continue my environmental, health and safety (EHS) career at Bostik is because of the high standard they have set for safety. I recall discovering during the interview process that Bostik had a robust system in place for safety. I quickly realized this was more than a system: they had a culture of commitment.

Leadership may lead the safety system, but it is the people that make safety happen. We all face with decisions and wrestle with risk versus reward decisions all the time. Our individual behaviors are summed up and become what we know and feel as the Bostik safety culture.

“Success is in the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.” -Robert Collier

To me, safety means caring about people and doing the right thing.  I see that happening at Bostik. I see it through employee involvement on the shop floor. I see leaders listening to concerns of all employees.  I see leaders acting to make improvements. For example, our local manufacturing group just upgraded a box lifter to assist in the handling of 75 pound boxes to prevent potential employee injuries as a result of input. At Bostik we share, we listen and we act.

World Day for Safety is celebrated on April 28.  Bostik has honored this celebration globally for nine years. No doubt, it’s a good time to stop and put a spotlight on safety, but Bostik’s commitment to safety isn’t just “a topic of the day”. It’s an ongoing commitment, it’s the culture.

I’m proud of the work I do– part of my role is to promote safety and communicate those values throughout the organization. I know I’m helping Bostik employees by keeping safety a priority.

Nine Years of Celebrating WDFS

Bostik’s Louisville, Kentucky plant celebrated World Day for Safety with a variety of training events and activities to include a Forklift Rodeo – a skill competition requiring the driver to lift, move and place an empty bucket on a cone and carry a load through a tight, spinning turn.
